The United States has vacillated between periods of openness and total secrecy concerning its nuclear warhead stockpile. Amid calls from watchdogs for greater transparency, the past three Presidential administrations have differed in their policies of revealing these numbers and when. Now, the National Nuclear Security Administration has opened up the books for the first time since 2021 and provided information about how many nuclear warheads exist in its inventory and more detailed information about the rate at which some of those warheads are being dismantled.
